What Er IF means
Er IF shows on Kenmore 795. bottom-freezer refrigerators, an LG-built platform, when the fan for the ice compartment has failed. That fan moves cold air into the ice-making area so ice freezes properly. When it stops, ice production slows or stops, ice can clump or melt, and the compartment may warm. You may also hear a buzz, a rattle, or no fan noise at all where there used to be some.
Common causes of Er IF
- Ice compartment fan motor
- Ice or frost blocking the fan
- Wiring to the fan
- Control board
1. Turn the ice maker off for now and check the ice bin. 2. Remove old or clumped ice from the bin by hand. 3. Make sure nothing blocks the ice compartment door. 4. Let the compartment run for a while and listen for the fan. 5. If Er IF returns, call us.
- A stuck fan from frost behaves like a dead motor until the ice is cleared
- We check for ice and wiring, then the motor
- We quote in writing before replacing a fan
Other Refrigerator codes
Will I still get ice?
Ice production may slow or stop while the ice fan is not running. The rest of the refrigerator usually continues to cool, but check the temperatures to be sure.
Can frost cause Er IF?
Yes. Ice can jam a fan, so clearing the bin and compartment is a safe first step. Do not chip at ice near the fan or the walls.
Can I clear the ice myself?
Emptying the bin by hand is fine. Please do not pry at ice around the fan or walls, and do not use heat tools. We can safely check the fan and wiring, with a written price first and a 30-day warranty on our work.
Still seeing Er IF?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
