What FD Lo / FD Hi / rD Lo / rD Hi means
Kenmore bottom-freezer refrigerators with 111 model numbers, a platform whose maker we could not document, use these four displays for the defrost sensors. FD marks a freezer defrost sensor failure and rD a refrigerator defrost sensor failure, with Lo or Hi giving the direction. The control cannot time defrost properly, so you may see frost or warm spots. Cooling can also feel uneven from shelf to shelf.
Common causes of FD Lo / FD Hi / rD Lo / rD Hi
- Freezer or refrigerator defrost sensor
- Sensor wiring and connector
- Control board input
1. Note the exact display, for example FD Hi or rD Lo. 2. Check that the doors seal and nothing props them open. 3. Look for frost on the back wall inside and keep vents clear. 4. Leave panel removal and meter work to us.
- Whether the sensor sits outside its expected resistance range or the wiring is the problem
- We test the circuit before replacing a sensor
- Lo versus Hi helps us decide whether to look for an open or a short

What is the difference between FD and rD?
FD refers to the freezer defrost sensor and rD to the refrigerator one. The Lo or Hi suffix tells us the direction of the bad reading, and together they decide which sensor we test first.
Do I need to replace the whole control?
Rarely. The sensor or its wiring is the usual place to look, and the board is checked last. We explain what we found and what it costs in writing before any part is ordered.
How soon should this be repaired?
Soon. Without good defrost data the control may defrost too little or too often, so frost builds and cooling slowly declines. Watch food temperatures, and call us if either section warms noticeably.
