What F3 means
A bare F3 on a Kenmore wall oven is a 790 code: on 790 manual-cleaning ovens, built by Electrolux, it means the oven temperature sensor has failed, with a normal sensor reading around 1,080 ohms. On 665 wall ovens, a Whirlpool-built platform, the code appears with a slash number instead: F3/E0 open, F3/E1 shorted, F3/E2 above 575 F in bake and F3/E3 above 950 F in clean. The owner sees F3 and the oven may not heat to temperature.
Common causes of F3
- Oven temperature sensor reading
- Sensor wiring and connector
- Electronic oven control
- Slash number shown on a 665
1. Leave the oven off until it is cool to the touch. 2. Note whether the display shows a slash and an E number. 3. Turn the breaker off briefly and back on to see whether F3 returns. 4. Do not poke at the sensor inside the oven. 5. Call us with the code and the model prefix.
- Whether the sensor, its wiring or the control is responsible stays open after the owner's checks.
- We measure the sensor resistance against its expected value.
- You approve the written price first, and the work carries a 30-day warranty.

What does F3 mean on my oven?
On a 790 oven it is an oven temperature sensor failure. On a 665 it comes with a slash number that says how the sensor circuit is failing.
What is the 1,080 ohm figure?
It is the approximate resistance the 790 sensor should read at room temperature. We measure it on site, because an owner should not test it live.
Can I use the oven?
Not with F3 showing. The oven cannot control its temperature properly, so food may burn or undercook and the control may be stressed. We would rather test the sensor first.
Still seeing F3?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
