Kenmore Refrigerator Warm but the Freezer Is Fine: Airflow Checks Before Anything Else
A Kenmore refrigerator that is cold in the freezer and warm in the fresh food section is often short of airflow between the two. Here is what to look at.
When the freezer is cold but the fresh food section is warm, the cooling system is usually working, and the cold air is not getting where it needs to go. Many Kenmore refrigerators cool the fresh food side by moving air from the freezer through a duct and a damper, so a blocked or stuck part there shows up as a warm refrigerator and a normal freezer.
Checks you can do
- Look at the vents in the fresh food section. Food pressed against them blocks the air.
- Clear out space behind and between containers so air can move.
- Check the temperature dial or setting. Children, cleaning and a long door-open period can change it.
- Look at the freezer back panel for heavy frost, which can restrict air to the duct.
- Listen for the fan in the freezer when the door is open and the switch is pressed.
What the signs suggest
- Frost on the freezer back wall: the defrost system may not be clearing the evaporator.
- A freezer fan that is silent: airflow stops even though the sealed system is running.
- A damper that does not move: the fresh food side gets too little cold air.
The limit of a home check
Frost on the evaporator can come from a defrost heater, a sensor or a control, and from a door seal that lets in humid air, which is more of an issue in Houston summers. You cannot tell which from the outside, and defrosting the unit with a hair dryer only buys time.
Food safety
If the fresh food side stays above safe temperatures, move perishables to a cooler. Discard anything that has been warm for hours. Ask for refrigerator repair and give us the model label, and we will test airflow first, then defrost, then the sealed system, with a written price before any part is ordered.
