Slow or Dripping Water From a Kenmore Refrigerator Dispenser: Filter, Line and Valve
A dispenser that trickles or drips after you let go usually points to the filter, the supply line or the inlet valve. Here is how to tell them apart.
When the water dispenser on a Kenmore refrigerator runs slowly or keeps dripping, the cause is almost always somewhere between the house shutoff and the dispenser tube. Work from the cheapest check to the most involved.
Start with the filter
A filter that has been in place for many months clogs and slows the flow. If the trickle started after a filter change, check that the new filter is seated and turned fully. Pull it and run the dispenser without it, if your model allows, to see whether flow improves. Use only a filter listed for your model number, because the prefix tells which platform you have and not all filters fit.
Check the supply
- Look at the saddle valve or shutoff behind the refrigerator and make sure it is fully open.
- Check the line for kinks where the refrigerator was pushed back.
- If a line is frozen or flattened, the flow will drop.
What the signs suggest
- Slow flow from both the water dispenser and the ice maker: supply or inlet valve.
- Slow flow from the dispenser only: filter or dispenser tube.
- Dripping after you release the lever: the valve may not be closing fully.
- Water that tastes or smells off: an old filter or a tube that needs flushing.
What not to conclude
Low flow does not prove the valve has failed. Hard water scale can clog a valve screen, and low water pressure in the house gives the same sign. We check pressure at the line before replacing parts.
If it keeps happening
Dripping water onto the floor is worth acting on, since a leak behind a refrigerator can damage flooring unseen. Ask for refrigerator repair and send the model label so we can plan the valve and filter fit before the visit.
