What LE means

On Kenmore top-load washers whose model numbers start with 796, an LG-built platform, LE means the drive motor thermal overload tripped. The motor got hot enough that its protection shut it off, so the washer stops mid-cycle and shows LE. A heavy load, a restriction in the drive system or a motor problem can each cause it. The same letters mean something different on a 796 front-load, so the platform is part of reading the code.

Common causes of LE

  • Restriction in the drive system, so the basket cannot turn freely
  • Drive motor that is overheating or worn
  • Wiring connections between the drive motor and the control board
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the washer and let it cool for a while before you go any further. 2. Open the lid and turn the basket by hand to see whether it spins freely. 3. Take clothes out if the load is very heavy. 4. If the basket sticks or the code returns, leave it unplugged and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the basket is blocked by something in the drive system
  • Whether the motor or its wiring is the reason it overheats
  • Whether the control board is sending the correct signal to the motor
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
LELE questions
Why did the washer stop in the middle of the cycle?

The motor has a thermal overload that trips when it gets too hot. It cuts power to protect itself, and the control shows LE. Cooling down may let it run again, but the cause remains.

Is it safe to restart after it cools?

A single restart to see if it spins is reasonable. If LE comes back, keep the washer off, because repeated overheating can damage the motor and its wiring.

How is this different from LE on a front-load?

A 796 front-load uses LE for a locked drive motor, not thermal overload, and a 402 front-load uses it for low water. We confirm your washer type before choosing which checks to run.
