What UE means
On Kenmore washers whose model numbers start with 796, an LG-built platform, UE means the load is out of balance. It applies to the front-load and Wi-Fi front-load as an unbalanced load. On the top-load it can also show as lowercase uE, meaning the load is out of balance or too small. The washer cannot spin up safely, so it stops and shows the code. The cause is most often in the load itself, or in how level the washer sits.
Common causes of UE
- Load that is small, tangled or heavy on one side
- Washer that is not level
- Suspension rods or springs that are worn (top-load)
1. Make sure the washer is properly leveled. 2. If the load is small, add a towel or two, or more garments. 3. Check whether the load is tangled, and untie it. 4. Redistribute heavy and light items, then restart. If it bangs in spin, stop and call us.

Why does a small load cause UE?
A very small load cannot balance itself in the drum. Adding a towel or two gives the washer something to spread, and the spin usually goes through after that.
What if the tub bangs violently?
On a top-load, one or more of the suspension rod and spring assemblies may need replacing. Stop the spin and unplug the washer, then call us so we can inspect it.
Is UE the same on every Kenmore?
No. A 402 uses dc, and a 110 uses other codes. On a 796 washer, UE is the unbalanced load message, so we confirm your model prefix first.
