What LE means
On Kenmore front-load washers whose model numbers start with 796, an LG-built platform, LE is a locked drive motor error. The control tells the motor to turn and does not get the speed signal back, so it stops the cycle. On the Wi-Fi front-load the same letters can also follow an overloaded drum or too many suds. The display shows LE and the drum stays still. On a 796 top-load LE means something else.
Common causes of LE
- Wire harness connections at the motor and the hall sensor (tachometer)
- Motor that is damaged or locked
- Hall sensor that is not reporting speed
- Overloaded drum or heavy suds in the tub (Wi-Fi model)
1. If the drum looks overloaded, take some clothes out and restart the cycle. 2. For future loads, fill the drum loosely. 3. If you see heavy suds, let the washer sit for 30 minutes, then run a Drain/Spin cycle. 4. Run a new cycle without detergent. If LE returns, call us.
- Whether the motor, the hall sensor or the wiring is the cause
- Whether the code appears only with big loads or heavy suds
- Whether the drum turns freely by hand with the washer off

What is the hall sensor?
It is a small speed sensor on the motor, also called a tachometer. The control reads it to confirm the drum is turning. If the signal never arrives, the control concludes the motor is locked and shows LE.
Can too much detergent cause LE?
On the Wi-Fi front-load, suds and a heavy load are listed among the things to check first. Let the suds settle and drain the tub before you try again.
Should I try to turn the drum by hand?
Only with the washer unplugged and the tub empty of water. If it feels stuck or makes noise, stop and tell us, because forcing it can add damage.
Still seeing LE?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
