Kenmore Washer Will Not Drain: Filter, Hose and Pump Checks in Order

A Kenmore washer that leaves water in the tub usually has a blockage or a pump that cannot move it. Here are the checks in the order that makes sense.

When a Kenmore washer stops with water still in the drum, work from the simplest cause to the hardest. Most standing water traces to something blocking the path out: a sock in the pump, a kinked hose or a clogged standpipe. Fewer cases come down to the pump motor itself.

Checks you can do

  1. Look for an error code on the display and write it down. Do not search it for a general meaning, because the code depends on the platform in your model number.
  2. Pull the washer forward and check that the drain hose is not crushed behind it.
  3. Confirm the hose end sits in the standpipe and is not pushed in so far that it seals.
  4. On a front-load washer, find the small access panel at the bottom front and open the drain filter. Place a towel and shallow pan first, since the drum water will come out.
  5. Clear anything in the filter, such as coins, hair ties and lint.

What the results mean

If the filter was packed and the water now leaves, the cause is found. If it was clean and the hose is open, the pump may be jammed deeper in or may have failed. A pump that hums but does not move water points one way, and a pump that makes no sound at all points another, but sound alone does not confirm which part to replace.

What to avoid

Do not run repeated cycles hoping it clears. Each one adds water, and a washer that cannot drain can overflow a floor drain or a laundry closet. Disconnect power before reaching into any housing.

If it still holds water

A top-load washer has a different layout, with the pump low on the base and no filter door, so the work is harder to do at home. Tell us your model prefix when you book a washer repair visit, and we will give you a written price before any part is ordered.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
