What F dS / r dS means
This applies to Kenmore bottom-freezer refrigerators with 795 model numbers, which are LG-built. F dS refers to the freezer defrost sensor and r dS to the refrigerator defrost sensor. The control reports a short or a wiring problem in that sensor's circuit. Defrost timing depends on this reading, so you may notice frost, uneven temperatures or a message that returns after the display is cleared.
Common causes of F dS / r dS
- Shorted defrost sensor
- Damaged wiring or loose connector on the sensor leads
- Control board input reading the sensor wrongly
1. Check which letter appears, F or r, and write it down for us. 2. Keep doors closed as much as you can to protect the food. 3. Look at the interior vents and clear anything blocking airflow. 4. Do not remove interior panels to reach the sensor.
- Whether the sensor itself is shorted or the wiring around it has been damaged
- We check connectors and leads first because a pinched wire mimics a bad sensor
- Part replacement is only proposed after the circuit tests point to it
Other Refrigerator codes
What does the S stand for?
It marks the sensor circuit. The code says the defrost sensor reads as shorted or wired wrongly, not that the defrost heater is dead, so the first tests are on the sensor and its wires and connectors.
Will it clear itself?
It can reappear whenever the control checks the sensor again. A real short stays until it is repaired, so a message that disappears for a day and returns is still telling us the circuit has a problem.
Is this the same as F dH?
No. F dH means the sensor did not warm past 40 degrees F during defrost, while F dS is about the sensor circuit itself. They share a family of parts, but the first tests are different.
Still seeing F dS / r dS?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
