What 3E / Hr / 2E / AE means
On Kenmore front-load washers whose model numbers start with 402, a platform whose builder is not named in our research, these four displays cover different circuits. 3E means no signal from the drive motor tachometer, Hr a heater relay failure, 2E an internal control board failure, and AE a communication error between the main board and the display board. The cycle usually stops or the display misbehaves.
Common causes of 3E / Hr / 2E / AE
- Drive motor tachometer signal or the motor wiring (3E)
- Heater relay on the main control board (Hr)
- Main control board (2E)
- Link between the main board and display board (AE)
1. Write down which of the four codes appears. 2. For Hr, unplug the washer for 5 minutes, plug it back in and see whether the code returns. 3. Make sure the drum is not overloaded or jammed with a stuck item. 4. Do not open the cabinet or touch the motor wiring.
- Which circuit is responsible: motor wiring, motor, relay or board
- For 3E we check the harness between the motor and board first, then the tachometer, then the motor
- If Hr returns after a 5-minute power-off, the main board is the likely next step, confirmed by testing
Other Washer codes
Why do four different codes share one page?
They all appear on the 402 front-load family, but each points to a separate circuit, so we start by reading which one you have and then choose the matching tests.
Does the 5-minute unplug fix Hr?
It can clear a one-time glitch on the main board. If Hr comes back, the relay on that board needs attention, and we confirm that with testing before we suggest a new board.
Is 2E serious?
It points inside the control board itself, so it usually needs a proper test before we recommend a new board. We check power and connections first so you do not pay for a board you do not need.
