What E31 / E32 / E35 / E38 means
On Kenmore front-load washers whose model numbers start with 417, E31 and E32 mean the water level pressure sensor is not communicating with the control board, E35 means the sensor detects an overfill, and E38 means a clogged air trap. E32 and E38 appear on the digital-display versions only. Water levels cannot be judged, so the cycle stops. Expect a halted cycle and a code on the display.
Common causes of E31 / E32 / E35 / E38
- Wire harness between the water level pressure sensor and the board (E31, E32)
- Water level pressure sensor itself
- Water overfilling the tub (E35)
- Clogged air trap (E38)
1. Write down which of the four codes shows. 2. For E35, check that water is not draining in from the house supply and that the drum is not overfull. 3. Make sure the faucets behind the washer are not leaking water in. 4. Unplug the washer and call us.
- Whether the harness, the sensor or the board is not communicating
- With E35, whether the tub really overfills or the sensor reads high
- With E38, whether the air trap is clogged and what is blocking it
Other Washer codes
What does the pressure sensor do?
It measures the water level in the drum through air pressure and tells the board when to stop filling. If the board loses that signal, the cycle cannot continue safely.
Which of these codes are digital only?
E32 and E38 are on the digital-display models; E31 and E35 appear on both versions. Tell us what your panel shows when you book so we plan the right checks.
Is E35 an actual overflow?
It can be, so unplug the washer if water keeps coming in and shut the faucets, then call us. Sometimes the sensor only reads high, and testing tells us which.
