What E52 / E55 / E57 / E58 / E59 means
These motor codes apply to Kenmore front-load washers whose model numbers start with 417. E52 is a bad drive motor tachometer signal and E59 is no tachometer signal for 3 seconds. E55 reads as motor overheating on the standard version and drive motor under speed on the 2014+ digital-display version. E57 and E58 mean high current on the motor control board or on the motor itself.
Common causes of E52 / E55 / E57 / E58 / E59
- Wire harness between the drive motor and motor control board
- Drive motor tachometer
- Drive motor or its bearings
- Spin bearing or tub drag
1. Note which of the five codes appears. 2. Reduce the load and check that nothing is jamming the drum. 3. Let the washer rest if it ran hot. 4. Do not remove the drive belt or work on the motor yourself.
- Whether the harness, the tachometer, the motor or a seized bearing is behind the code
- A meter check on the tachometer is something we do, not an owner
- A spin bearing problem can mean the outer tub is the real repair, which we explain first
Other Washer codes
Does E55 mean the same thing on all 417 washers?
No. On the standard version it points to motor overheating, while on the digital-display version it means the drive motor is under speed. Tell us your panel type when booking.
What is the tachometer?
It is a sensor in the drive motor that tells the board how fast the drum is turning. If its signal is bad or missing, the board stops the motor and shows a code.
Is a heavy load a possible cause?
It can add strain, so reduce the load, but repeating codes on a light load need a proper check of the motor, the bearings and the wiring.
