What EA1 / EA2 / EA3 / EB1 / EB2 / EB3 (417-prefix) means

On Kenmore front-load washers whose model numbers start with 417, these six codes watch the incoming household power, and which set you see depends on the sub-platform. Digital-display models from 2014 on use EA1 for power frequency out of limits, EA2 for voltage above 130 volts AC and EA3 for voltage below 100 volts AC. Non-digital 417 models use EB1 for frequency, EB2 for voltage above 130 volts AC and EB3 for voltage below 90 volts AC. The washer stops the cycle and shows the code.

Common causes of EA1 / EA2 / EA3 / EB1 / EB2 / EB3 (417-prefix)

  • Household outlet voltage that is too high or too low (EA2, EA3, EB2, EB3)
  • Power frequency from the supply that is outside the limits (EA1, EB1)
  • Control board that misreads normal incoming power
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the washer. 2. Plug it directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip. 3. If lights flicker elsewhere in the house, tell your electrician or power provider. 4. Restore power and start a cycle; if the code returns, call us and do not keep restarting it.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the outlet supply is really high or low, which we measure at the wall
  • Whether the supply is normal and the control board is misreading it
  • Which sub-platform your washer belongs to, since digital and non-digital thresholds differ
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
EA1 / EA2 / EA3 / EB1 / EB2 / EB3 (417-prefix)EA1 / EA2 / EA3 / EB1 / EB2 / EB3 (417-prefix) questions
Why do some 417 washers show EA codes and others EB?

The 417 family has two sub-platforms. Digital-display models from 2014 use EA1 to EA3, while non-digital models use EB1 to EB3 for the same three power conditions.

Are the voltage limits identical?

Not quite. EA3 triggers below 100 volts AC on digital models, while EB3 triggers below 90 volts AC on non-digital ones. Both high-voltage codes trigger above 130 volts AC.

Can my own wiring cause this?

Yes, a weak or overloaded circuit is possible. We check the outlet first, and if the supply is good we then look at the control board, with a written price before any work.
