What F/06 means

On older Kenmore HE front-load washers whose model numbers start with 110, a Whirlpool-built platform with the F/xx display, F/06 is a motor tachometer failure. The tachometer reports how fast the drive motor is turning so the motor control board can hold the right speed. When that speed signal is missing, the washer cannot tumble or spin properly and displays F/06. You may see the drum fail to turn or the cycle stop partway through.

Common causes of F/06

  • Wiring between the motor control board and the drive motor
  • Drive motor whose speed signal is lost
  • Motor control board that is not reading the signal
  • Harness connection between the motor control board and the main control board
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the washer off and make sure the drum is not blocked by a trapped item. 2. Redistribute the load if it is heavy or lopsided. 3. Try one short spin cycle. 4. If F/06 appears again, stop and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the motor, its wiring or the motor control board is behind the lost signal
  • Whether the drum turns freely by hand when the washer is off
  • Whether the main-to-motor board link is intact
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F/06F/06 questions
What is a motor tachometer?

It is the sensor that tells the washer how fast the motor is turning. Without that feedback, the motor control board cannot regulate the drive, so it stops and shows F/06.

Does F/06 mean the motor is dead?

Not necessarily. The motor, its wiring or the motor control board might be involved. We test the whole drive path before suggesting a part. Only a test of the motor circuit shows which part is weak.

Could a heavy load cause it?

An overloaded or lopsided drum can strain the drive, so lighten the load and retry. If the code returns with a small load, the drive needs a proper check.
