What F5 E1 means
Kenmore top-load washers with model numbers starting 110. come from Whirlpool and are sold in VMW and VMAX versions. On both, F5 E1 is a lid switch error. On the VMW it appears when Start is pressed with the lid open, or when the switch in the lid lock assembly does not read the lid correctly. On the VMAX it appears when the switch reports an open lid while the lid is locked. You will see F5 E1 and the cycle will not run.
Common causes of F5 E1
- Lid not fully closed when Start was pressed
- Lid switch in the lid lock and switch assembly reading the lid wrongly
- Wiring between the lid assembly and the main electronic control board
1. Close the lid completely, pressing down until it seats. 2. Look around the lid edge and latch for lint, detergent crust or a trapped garment. 3. Press Start again. 4. If F5 E1 returns with a clean, closed lid, stop using the washer and leave it unplugged for our visit.
- Whether the lid switch reads closed when the lid really is closed
- Whether the lock assembly or the wiring behind it is the cause
- Whether the lid itself sits true over the latch
Other Washer codes
Why does F5 E1 show up even though my lid is shut?
It is a lid switch error. The control either got a Start with the lid open or a lid-open signal while the lid was locked, so on this Whirlpool-built VMW or VMAX platform it will not run.
Why does F5 E1 appear with the lid shut?
The switch in the lid lock assembly may not be reading the lid properly, or its wiring may be loose. A clean latch area is worth checking first, then we test the switch.
Is F5 E1 related to F5 E2?
They share the lid system, but F5 E2 is about the lock itself and F5 E1 is about the switch. We look at both together because one lid assembly serves them, and we test it before quoting.

A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
