What F7 E4 and F7 E5 means
On Kenmore VMAX top-load washers whose model numbers start with 110., a Whirlpool-built platform, F7 E4 and F7 E5 both report clutch failure: the clutch did not engage the spin basket when spin began. The washer washes but the basket does not spin out the water, so loads stay soaked. You will see one of the codes on the display. On the VMW version of this platform, F7 E5 is a different code, a shifter assembly problem.
Common causes of F7 E4 and F7 E5
- Obstruction around the clutch
- Clutch damaged and unable to engage
- Wiring between the clutch and the main electronic control board
1. Stop the cycle and open the lid. 2. Check for anything caught around the basket or under the impeller. 3. Do not wring out heavy loads by hand beyond what is safe. 4. Leave the cabinet closed. The clutch and its wiring are for us to test.
- Whether the clutch is mechanically damaged or blocked
- Whether the wiring to the clutch is loose
- Whether the main board is sending the engage signal
Other Washer codes
Why are my clothes still wet with F7 E4 on a VMAX?
It means the clutch did not engage the spin basket. On this Whirlpool-built platform the basket then cannot spin out water, and the control flags clutch failure with F7 E4 or F7 E5.
Is F7 E5 always a clutch problem?
Only on the VMAX. On a VMW washer, F7 E5 points to the shifter assembly instead. Confirm your version before reading the code, and tell us the model number when you book so we bring the right checks.
Why is my laundry soaking wet?
Without the clutch, the basket does not spin. Drain the tub if you can, then call us. Please do not keep restarting the cycle, since the washer cannot complete a spin until the clutch is checked.
