What F2 / F4 / FC (362-prefix) means

GE built the Kenmore ranges with model numbers starting 362., and its code set mixes three kinds of trouble. F2 means oven over-temperature, from a stuck relay or a sensor reading wrong. F3 is an open sensor and F4 a shorted sensor. F9 or FC means the door lock has failed. You will see one of these on the display, and the oven may shut down, run hot, or stay locked after a clean cycle.

Common causes of F2 / F4 / FC (362-prefix)

  • Oven temperature sensor, open or shorted
  • Heat relay on the control stuck on
  • Door lock motor and switch, for FC or F9
  • Control board
✓ One safe check you can try

1. If the oven felt unusually hot, turn it off and keep the door closed so it cools. 2. Smell gas at any point? Leave the house and phone the gas utility from outside. 3. Do not force a locked door. 4. Unplug the range for a few minutes, then try a short bake. 5. If a code returns, call us with it.

! Why to stop there
  • Over-temperature can come from the sensor or from a relay that will not release
  • We test the sensor circuit first, then the relay
  • The lock is checked separately, and we quote in writing first
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F2 / F4 / FC (362-prefix)F2 / F4 / FC (362-prefix) questions
Does F3 or F9 appear on the same range?

Yes. On this 362 platform F3 is an open sensor and F9 is a door lock failure, the same as FC. We read the actual code first.

Is it safe to use?

Not if the oven is running hot. Turn it off and cool it. A sensor code alone usually means poor temperature control rather than danger.

How do you decide between sensor and relay?

We test the sensor circuit and watch whether the heat relay releases when it should. That separates a wrong reading from a heat circuit that stays on. A written price comes first, and the work carries a 30-day warranty.
