A Kenmore Dryer That Needs Two Cycles: Vent Runs and Lint Fire Risk in Houston Homes
When a Kenmore dryer takes two cycles to finish a load, the heat is often trapped by a restricted vent. Here is how to check, and why it is a safety matter.
If a Kenmore dryer needs two cycles for one load, the first thing to suspect is airflow. A dryer must move a lot of air out of the house, and when the vent is restricted, the heat stays in the drum and the cabinet. That is a drying problem, and it is also a fire risk, because lint builds up where the air slows down.
Signs the vent is restricted
- Clothes are hot but still damp at the end of the cycle.
- The top of the dryer or the laundry room feels warm.
- A musty smell of hot lint when the dryer runs.
- Little air at the outside vent flap, or a flap that does not open.
Checks you can do
- Clean the lint screen and run your hand into the housing to pull out what the screen missed.
- Pull the dryer forward and look at the transition duct. Foil ducts that are crushed or sagging trap lint.
- Disconnect the duct and compare airflow at the dryer outlet with airflow at the wall.
- Go outside and watch the vent flap while the dryer runs.
Houston-specific causes
Many Houston homes run long vent paths through an attic or up and out through a roof cap, with several turns. Long runs and birds or insects nesting in a roof cap are common reasons for restriction. A vent that has not been cleaned since the house was built is a likely candidate.
What the vent cannot explain
A clear vent with a dryer that still dries poorly shifts the focus to the heating parts or the thermostats. We check airflow first because it is the cheapest to rule in or out. If you smell burning, stop using the dryer. When you book a dryer repair visit, tell us how long the vent run is and where it exits.
