What HS means
Kenmore Elite dryers beginning 796 are LG-built, and on them HS means the humidity sensor has failed. The sensor tells the dryer how damp the clothes are during sensor cycles, so without it those cycles cannot judge dryness. The owner sees HS in the display and the dryer may end cycles early or run long. On this LG-built Kenmore Elite platform the humidity sensor is a separate circuit from the temperature sensors, which have their own tE codes.
Common causes of HS
- Humidity sensor reading
- Sensor wiring
- Residue on the sensor
- Control reading the sensor input
1. Turn the dryer off. 2. Unplug it if you will not use it. 3. Clean the lint screen. 4. Note when HS appears. 5. Call us and leave the drum area and panels alone. Leave the drum empty until we arrive.
- HS names the sensor circuit, but the sensor, its wiring and the control remain candidates.
- We test the sensor and its connection before we quote a part.
- The price is written first, and our 30-day warranty covers the work.
Other Dryer codes
Why does my display show HS?
The humidity sensor has failed on a 796-series, LG-built Kenmore Elite dryer. That sensor tells the dryer how damp the clothes are during sensor-based cycles.
Can I still dry clothes?
Timed cycles may still work, but sensor cycles cannot judge dryness correctly. Clothes may come out damp or be over-dried until the sensor circuit is repaired.
Should I turn the dryer off?
The Kenmore documentation says to turn the dryer off and call for service, and we follow the same advice instead of working around the code.
Still seeing HS?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
