What E5A or E5C means
Kenmore 417 digital-display front-load washers from 2014 onward, such as 417.44130000, show E5A or E5C when the motor control board is overheated. Either letter calls out the same protection shutdown. The drive stops, the drum quits and the display holds the code. Because the digital version lists both letters together, we read the code on your panel and test the same board.
Common causes of E5A or E5C
- Overheated motor control board
- Electronic control board feeding it
- Airflow around the board
1. Unplug the washer for a while and keep the clothes out of the drum. 2. Check that vents and the area around the cabinet are clear. 3. Run one small load to see whether the code returns. 4. If it does, call us and leave the washer unplugged.
- Whether a defective motor control board is the cause or heat is building from the drive side
- We look at the motor load and board together
- Board replacement is quoted in writing
Other Washer codes
Is E5A different from E5C?
On the digital 417 version both mean the motor control board is overheated, so the board is where we start, together with a look at the motor load.
Why does the page list both letters?
The digital version groups them in one entry, so we read the code on your panel and test the same board either way. The last letter does not change the repair.
How hot is too hot?
The board has its own limit and shuts down when it hits it. You do not need to measure anything; just note when the code appeared in the cycle and tell us.
Still seeing E5A or E5C?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
