What F/09 means
On older Kenmore HE front-load washers whose model numbers start with 110, a Whirlpool-built platform with the F/xx display, F/09 means an overflow. The drain pump runs constantly in an effort to get rid of the water, because the water level is higher than it should be. The owner hears the pump keep running and sees F/09. If the drum is overfilled, the water inlet valve may not be shutting off. If the drum is empty, the level reading itself is suspect.
Common causes of F/09
- Water inlet valve assembly that does not shut off water flow
- Water level sensing that reports a false overflow
- Drain pump that cannot keep up with incoming water
1. Turn off the water supply valves behind the washer. 2. Unplug the washer if water is rising or leaking. 3. Do not open the door while it is full of water. 4. Call us and describe whether the drum was full or empty.
- Whether the inlet valve is leaking through when the washer is off
- Whether the washer is truly overfilled or the level reading is wrong
- Whether the drain pump and hose are clearing water as designed
Other Washer codes
Why does the pump keep running with F/09?
The washer thinks there is too much water, so it runs the drain pump nonstop to remove it. That is a protective response to an overflow reading.
What should I do first?
Close the water supply valves and unplug the washer if the level is high. This prevents more water entering while we check the inlet valve and level sensing.
Can F/09 appear when the drum is empty?
Yes, it can, and that points us toward the level sensing rather than the inlet valve. We test both during the visit and quote in writing first.
Still seeing F/09?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
