What F0 E4 (110 / Whirlpool-built) means

On Kenmore top-load washers whose model numbers start with 110, a Whirlpool-built platform sold as VMW and VMAX, F0 E4 reports water that is too hot. On the VMW it appears in the rinse cycle as high water temperature. On the VMAX it appears during the final spin, and the washer limits spin speed to 500 rpm while the code is showing. The owner may notice slower spins and damper clothes. A hot water valve that sticks open is one cause.

Common causes of F0 E4 (110 / Whirlpool-built)

  • Hot water valve that sticks open and lets hot water in
  • Fill hoses connected to the wrong supply
  • Water temperature sensor reading too high
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Make sure the hot and cold fill hoses are connected to the correct faucets. 2. Run a cold-only rinse and see whether the code clears. 3. Feel whether the cold hose runs warm. 4. If F0 E4 returns, call us.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the hot valve is closing fully
  • Whether the temperature sensor reads correctly
  • Whether your home water heater is simply delivering very hot water
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F0 E4 (110 / Whirlpool-built)F0 E4 (110 / Whirlpool-built) questions
Why is my spin slower with F0 E4?

On the VMAX, the washer deliberately limits spin speed to 500 rpm when the water is too hot. Clothes may come out wetter than usual until the cause is fixed.

Could my fill hoses be swapped?

Yes, and it is worth a quick look. Hoses connected to the wrong faucets can send hot water into a cold or rinse step. Swapping them back takes a minute and costs nothing.

Is a stuck valve likely?

It is one of the main suspects. We test the water valve assembly and the temperature sensor, then quote the work in writing. If the valve sticks open, replacing the valve assembly is the normal repair.
