What lid or F81 means

On Kenmore Oasis top-load washers whose model numbers start with 110, lid or F81 means the lid was not closed, or was not opened between cycles. You will see it if you press Start with the lid open. It also appears if you press Start after two cycles in a row without lifting the lid. The washer will not run and shows the code until the control detects the lid in the closed position.

Common causes of lid or F81

  • Lid that is still open or not fully closed when Start is pressed
  • Two cycles run in a row without opening the lid
  • Lid lock and switch assembly that does not read lid position
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Open the lid fully, then close it firmly. 2. If you just ran two cycles in a row, lift the lid once and shut it before pressing Start. 3. Look for anything under the lid edge that keeps it from seating. 4. If the code stays with the lid down, call us.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the lid really closes and the lock assembly does not sense it
  • Whether the code appears every time or only between cycles
  • Whether the lid switch wiring is intact
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
lid or F81lid or F81 questions
Why does the washer want me to open the lid between cycles?

The control expects the lid to be opened between loads, so after two cycles in a row it asks for that. Lifting the lid once resets the expectation, and you can start again.

The lid is closed and I still see F81. Why?

Then the lid lock and switch assembly is not reporting the lid position. That assembly is what we check, since the lid itself and the latch area can look fine.

Is it safe to use the washer with the lid propped?

No. The lid detection is there for your safety. Never tape or prop the lid to get around it, and have us check the switch instead.
