What nF1 means
On Kenmore front-load washers whose model numbers start with 402, nF1 means the hot and cold water connections are reversed. The control checks the temperature of the water it gets against what the cycle calls for. When the two inlets are swapped at the back of the washer, it flags nF1 and does not continue. This one is about the hoses and not about the washer itself, and it is normally cleared by connecting them correctly.
Common causes of nF1
- Hot and cold fill hoses connected to the wrong inlets
- Water supply faucets plumbed backward at the wall
1. Shut off both water supply faucets. 2. Check the hose labels or color marks on the back of the washer. 3. Connect the hot hose to the hot inlet and the cold hose to the cold inlet, hand-tight. 4. Turn the faucets on, check for drips and start the cycle again.
- Whether the faucets in the wall are labeled backward
- Whether the code remains after the hoses are correct
- Whether the connections drip after being moved
Other Washer codes
Is nF1 the same as nF on a 402 washer?
They are related but not the same. Plain nF on a 402 is a water fill problem. The added 1 identifies hot and cold hoses that are reversed, so the checks are different.
Can I run a load with the hoses reversed?
The washer will not continue past the code. Even if it did, water at the wrong temperature can be hard on fabrics, so correct the hoses before you wash.
What if the hoses are right?
Then the temperature sensing or the faucets in the wall may be involved. We check the hoses, the connections and the sensing, and give you a written price before any repair.
Still unsure about nF1?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
