What PE means

On Kenmore washers whose model numbers start with 796, an LG-built platform, PE is a water level sensor failure. It is reported by the front-load, the Wi-Fi front-load and the top-load alike. The control cannot get a believable reading from the sensor that tells it how much water is in the tub. It shows PE and stops the cycle so it does not overfill or run dry. The cause could be in the sensor, its wiring, or the control board.

Common causes of PE

  • Wire harness connections between the water level sensor and the electronic control board
  • Damaged wire harness
  • Water level sensor that is not reading correctly
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the washer for a few minutes, then plug it back in. 2. Start a short cycle and watch whether PE returns. 3. Do not pull at the wires behind the control. 4. If it comes back, leave the harness and sensor to us.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the sensor or its wiring is the cause
  • Whether the control board reads the sensor signal correctly
  • Whether the reading is lost only when the tub is full
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
PEPE questions
Does PE mean the washer has a leak?

No. PE is about the sensor that measures the water level, not about a leak. It can still stop the cycle, because the control will not fill without a reliable reading.

Why did the washer work and then show PE?

A loose connection can come and go, so the code may appear only sometimes. We check the connections and the sensor together to find a pattern.

Is PE the same on the top-load and front-load?

On all three 796 washer types it names the water level sensor, so the checks are close. We still confirm your exact model number first and quote in writing.
