Finding Parts for an Older Kenmore Dryer: Start With the Model Number, Not the Drum Size
Belts, rollers and thermal fuses for an older Kenmore dryer depend on the model number prefix and the revision. Here is how to read it and order the right part.
Older Kenmore dryers are often worth keeping, because the cabinets and drums were built to last. The difficulty is matching parts. Kenmore dryers were built by different companies over the years, so a belt that fits one will not fit another, even when the cabinets look the same.
Gather three things first
- The full model number, including the digits before the dot, such as 110. for a Whirlpool-built dryer.
- The serial number, which helps identify the production year.
- Whether the dryer is gas or electric, which changes the heating parts entirely.
Where the number is
Open the dryer door and look on the frame around the opening, or inside the door itself. Some are on the back panel or on the side of the cabinet. If the label has worn off, check the original manual or ask us to identify it by the cabinet and control layout.
Parts that wear out in older dryers
- Drum belt and idler pulley, noticeable when the drum stops turning or squeals.
- Drum support rollers and glides, noticeable as a rumble or scrape.
- Thermal fuse and thermostats, which stop the heating if the dryer overheats.
- Door switch and start switch, which keep the dryer from starting.
What to watch for
A part number found by searching the marketing name often fits a sibling model only partly. A new belt on a worn idler or a thermal fuse replaced without clearing the vent will fail again. A thermal fuse that opened is a sign something made the dryer overheat, and the reason has to be found before a new one goes in.
If you want help
Send the label photo with your booking. We read the prefix before the visit so that likely parts are identified in advance, and the price is written down before work begins. Details are on our dryer repair page.
