What Main Board LED 4 or 6 Flickers means
Kenmore top-freezer refrigerators with model numbers starting 111 come from a platform whose builder is not documented. With no display, the main board blinks its LED. Four flickers mean the control senses the refrigerator door has been open for more than an hour, and six flickers mean the defrost heater has failed. The first is a door or switch condition, the second leads to frost and warming.
Common causes of Main Board LED 4 or 6 Flickers
- Door left ajar or a door switch not reading closed (4 flickers)
- Door switch wiring (4 flickers)
- Defrost heater and its wiring (6 flickers)
1. For four flickers, close the refrigerator door firmly and make sure no shelf item or bin keeps it from shutting. 2. Watch whether the light inside turns off when the door is closed. 3. For six flickers, move perishables to a cooler if the compartment warms. 4. Do not open the board cover or the back panel.
- With four flickers, whether the switch or its wiring is stuck, or the door truly does not seal
- With six flickers, the heater is tested against its expected resistance before anything is replaced
- Frost left on the evaporator may hide the real cause until it melts

Why would a door give a code?
If the board believes the door stayed open over an hour, it flags it. A bent hinge, a blocked door or a worn door switch can all cause that, which is why closing it properly is the first step.
What does six flickers affect?
The defrost heater. When it stops working, frost builds on the evaporator and the compartments gradually warm, so food in the freezer is the first thing to watch while you wait for service.
Can the door check be done by me?
Closing the door properly and clearing anything that blocks it is fine. Anything involving the switch wiring or the board cover should be left to us, and we test the switch with a meter on site.
