What dE / dE1 / dE2 means

On Kenmore washers whose model numbers start with 796, an LG-built platform, dE tells you the control thinks the door is open on a front-load model, or the lid is not closed on a top-load. On the Wi-Fi front-load version the code appears as dE1 or dE2, with dE2 meaning the door is closed but not locked. The washer will not start or stops mid-cycle.

Is dE1 different from dE?

They describe the same open-door condition on the Wi-Fi front-load version, where dE2 specifically means the door is closed but not locked. Both lead us to the door lock and switch assembly and its wiring.

Do top-load washers show dE?

Yes, but there it means the lid is not detected as closed. A lid that is bumped open, loaded over the edge or misaligned can trigger it, so check the lid before calling.

Will a new lock fix it?

Only if the door and wiring check out. A misaligned door or a loose connector can look identical to a failed lock, which is why we test the wiring first and quote the part in writing.
