What EAE means
On Kenmore digital-display front-load washers from about 2014, model numbers starting 417, EAE is a line safe relay sensing failure. The control board uses a safety relay to switch line power, and it watches that relay to confirm it is in the state it should be. EAE appears when the sensing does not match what the board expects. The owner sees the code and the washer stops, because it will not run when the power-switching check fails.
Common causes of EAE
- Safety relay on the control board not reading as expected
- Incoming power frequency or voltage outside normal range
- Electronic control board with a failed sensing circuit
1. Unplug the washer and leave it off for several minutes. 2. Plug it directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip. 3. Ask your power company to check the supply if household power seems unstable. 4. If EAE returns, leave the washer unplugged and call us.
- Whether the supply at the outlet is steady
- Whether the relay sensing on the control board has actually failed
- Whether the board needs replacing or the cause is outside the washer
Other Washer codes
What does EAE mean?
It means the safety relay that switches line power is not being sensed correctly by the control board. The washer stops rather than continue without a reliable power check.
Is EAE the same as EA5?
They are close cousins. EA5 is main voltage sensing, while EAE is the line safety relay sensing. Both lead us to the supply and the control board.
Can I keep trying cycles?
We suggest you do not. Repeated restarts will not fix a power-switching problem, and leaving it unplugged until we inspect it is the safer choice.
Still seeing EAE?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
