What F9 E1, F9 E2, drn or dr means

Kenmore 110-prefix VMAX top-load washers use four different readouts for one condition: F9 E1, F9 E2, drn or dr. All of them tell you the water level did not change after the drain pump ran, which is a long drain. The washer cannot finish the cycle, so the load stays wet and the display holds the code. Which characters you see depends on the model year, but the condition behind them is the same drain problem.

Common causes of F9 E1, F9 E2, drn or dr

  • Clog or restriction in the drain hose or the house drain
  • Drain pump that is clogged with lint or small items
  • Drain pump that is defective and does not move water
  • Water level sensing that still reads a full tub
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Check the drain hose behind the washer for a clog or a hard bend. 2. Make sure the washer drain in the wall is flowing freely. 3. Unplug the washer if you need to look at the pump area, and leave the pump itself alone. 4. Restart a drain cycle and note whether the readout comes back. 5. If it does, stop and call us with the exact characters on the display.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the blockage sits in the house drain, the hose or the pump
  • Whether the pump is clogged or has stopped working
  • Whether the level sensing agrees with the real water level in the tub
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F9 E1, F9 E2, drn or drF9 E1, F9 E2, drn or dr questions
My display says drn, not F9 E1. Is that a different problem?

It is the same condition. The VMAX line shows F9 E1, F9 E2, drn or dr depending on the model, and each one means the tub did not drain as expected after the pump ran.

Should I keep restarting the cycle?

A restart is fine once to see whether the code returns. Repeated restarts only move more water into a drain that is already blocked, so stop after one try and have the drain path checked.

Will you check the house drain too?

We look at the washer side first, because that is what we can fix. If the water backs up at the wall drain instead, we tell you so before any work is priced.
