What FE means
On Kenmore washers whose model numbers start with 796, an LG-built platform, FE on a front-load or Wi-Fi front-load means water overflow. The control sees too much water in the tub, and the drain pump runs constantly to pull it down. You will hear the pump going while the display shows FE. The same two letters on a 796 top-load mean the water level is too high, so the platform matters when we read the code.
Common causes of FE
- Inlet water valve that does not shut off the water after the fill
- Inlet valve that leaks while the washer is unplugged
- Water level sensing that reports a tub fuller than it is
1. Shut off the water supply valves behind the washer. 2. Unplug the washer and see whether any water is still standing in the tub. 3. Turn the supply back on only after the cord is out and watch whether the tub slowly fills by itself. 4. If it does, leave the water off and call us. If the tub stays dry, plug in and start a short cycle.
- Whether an inlet valve is passing water when it should be closed
- Whether the level sensing agrees with the real water level
- Whether the drain pump is running because of FE or the other way around
Other Washer codes
Why does my washer drain by itself when FE shows?
The control is trying to remove the extra water it detects. That is why the pump runs constantly. Leave the supply off until we confirm the valves close properly, so the tub does not keep refilling.
Is FE the same on a 796 top-load?
On a 796 top-load the same letters mean the water level is too high, which is close but not identical. We confirm your exact model number before choosing which checks to run.
Could this flood my laundry room?
A valve that leaks through can keep adding water, so close the supply valves when you are away. Keep the washer unplugged if water has reached the floor, until we inspect it.
Still seeing FE?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
