What ES / d2 means
On Kenmore bottom-freezer refrigerators whose model numbers start with 111, a platform whose builder we cannot identify from any documentation, two different displays share this entry. ES means the dispenser has a problem, typically a Water or Ice button that is stuck down. d2 means the refrigerator is in forced defrost mode, which ends by itself once an evaporator reaches 55 degrees F.
Common causes of ES / d2
- Stuck Water or Ice dispenser button
- User interface board that keeps reading a button as pressed
- Forced defrost still running (d2 clears on its own)
1. For ES, press each dispenser button firmly a few times and see whether one is sticking. 2. Wipe around the buttons and the dispenser pad with a damp cloth to remove spills. 3. For d2, leave the refrigerator alone and keep the doors closed so the defrost can finish. 4. If either message stays on, stop there and call us.
- Whether a button is physically stuck or the user interface board is registering a press that is not there
- We free the button first, and only if that does not clear it do we look at the interface board
- We cannot tell from the display alone whether d2 is a normal cycle or a stalled one

Is d2 an error?
Not always. It is the forced defrost mode, and it ends once an evaporator warms to 55 degrees F. If it never ends, or keeps returning, a defrost problem needs a proper look from us.
Why would a button cause ES?
A Water or Ice button that stays pressed makes the control think the dispenser is failing. Freeing the button often clears it, and it is a simple first test you can do with a clean damp cloth and a few firm presses.
Who built the 111 platform?
We have not found that documented anywhere, so we describe it only by its 111 model prefix and diagnose from what the refrigerator actually does, instead of assuming it behaves like another maker's design.
