What E14 means
On Kenmore front-load washers whose model numbers start with 417, non-digital versions only, E14 means the control does not see the dispenser drawer as closed. Some models use a magnetic reed switch in the drawer housing for this. A missing magnet on the underside of the drawer or a failed switch will make the washer think the drawer is open and refuse to continue.
Common causes of E14
- Drawer not pushed fully closed
- Missing or loose magnet on the bottom of the drawer
- Reed switch in the dispenser housing
1. Pull the dispenser drawer out and push it fully closed until it seats. 2. Look at the underside for the small magnet and check that it is still there. 3. Clean any detergent buildup that stops the drawer closing. 4. Press Start again.
- Whether the magnet is missing or the reed switch is failing
- We check the magnet first, then the switch
- The switch sits inside the housing, so we handle that part
Other Washer codes
What is a reed switch?
It is a small magnetically operated switch that detects whether the dispenser drawer is closed. A magnet on the underside of the drawer triggers it, and the washer will not continue if that signal is missing.
Does every 417 washer show E14?
Only the non-digital version does. Digital models use different codes and are listed separately, so check the panel style of your washer before comparing it with this page.
Can detergent buildup cause it?
Yes, residue can keep the drawer from closing fully, so cleaning it is a good first step. If the drawer closes freely and E14 stays, the magnet or switch is the next place we look.
