What EF2 / EF6 / EF8 (417-prefix) means
On Kenmore front-load washers whose model numbers start with 417, EF2 means too much suds and shows on both standard and digital-display models. On digital-display models from 2014 on, EF6 reports a control reset and EF8 reports a stuck button. EF2 is the one most owners meet: too much detergent foam makes the washer stop. These codes are mostly about use and the control panel, not about a failed major part.
Common causes of EF2 / EF6 / EF8 (417-prefix)
- Too much high-efficiency detergent or the wrong detergent (EF2)
- Control that reset itself after a power glitch (EF6)
- A button that is held down or sticking on the panel (EF8)
1. For EF2, use less high-efficiency (HE) detergent and run a rinse. 2. For EF8, gently press each button once to release anything that is stuck. 3. For EF6, unplug the washer for a few minutes, then plug it back in. 4. If the code returns after these steps, call us.
- Whether a stuck button is mechanical or a control panel problem
- Whether EF6 was one power glitch or a control that keeps resetting
- Whether suds are the full story or drain or water level also play a part
Other Washer codes
How much detergent should I use?
Use only high-efficiency detergent and measure carefully; front-loaders need far less than older machines. Too much produces suds, and EF2 is the washer's way of stopping before it overflows.
Does EF8 mean the panel is damaged?
Not necessarily. It says a button is being read as pressed, which can be a stuck key or grime. If gentle pressing does not release it, we inspect the control panel.
Why do only some 417 washers show EF6 and EF8?
Those two are documented for digital-display models from 2014 on. EF2 appears on both standard and digital 417 front-loaders. If you see EF6 or EF8 on a standard 417 model, tell us the exact characters and your full model number.
