What F/14 means

On older Kenmore HE front-load washers whose model numbers start with 110, a Whirlpool-built platform with the F/xx display, F/14 is an EEPROM error on the main control board. The EEPROM is the memory chip that holds the board's settings and program data, and F/14 means that data has become corrupted. The washer stops and shows the code. It is a control board matter, not a water or drain one, and a power-down sometimes lets the board reload.

Common causes of F/14

  • Corrupted settings memory (EEPROM) on the main electronic control board
  • Power interruption or surge that damaged the stored data
  • Main control board that can no longer keep its memory
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the washer and leave it off for 5 minutes. 2. Plug it back in and check whether F/14 is gone. 3. If it has cleared, run a short test load. 4. If it comes back, stop and call us for a board check.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the reset really cleared the memory or the code is only paused
  • Whether the board keeps corrupting its data
  • Which replacement board matches your model
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F/14F/14 questions
What is an EEPROM?

It is a small memory chip on the main board that stores the washer's settings and program data. If that data is damaged, the board reports F/14.

Will the five-minute unplug fix it?

It can. A full power-down lets the board restart and sometimes reload its memory. If F/14 returns, the board is no longer reliable and probably needs replacing.

Could a power surge have caused it?

Possibly. Surges can corrupt stored data, so a surge protector is wise after a repair. We quote in writing before replacing anything. A surge protector on the outlet is inexpensive protection for the board.
