What F25 means

Front-load Kenmore washers carrying a 110. model-number prefix come from a Whirlpool-built platform sold as HE2, HE2 Plus, HE5 and HE5 Steam. On them F25 is a drive motor tachometer error: the motor control board is not receiving speed feedback it can trust from the motor. Without it the control cannot spin the drum at a controlled speed. You may see the washer fill and tumble, then stop with F25 on the display, or refuse to spin at all.

Common causes of F25

  • Loose or damaged wiring between the motor control board and the drive motor
  • Wiring between the motor control board and the main control board
  • Drive motor speed feedback that no longer reads correctly
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Open the door and turn the drum by hand to see whether it moves freely. 2. Check for a sock or small item wedged between the drum and the tub. 3. Reduce the load size and start a short cycle. 4. If F25 returns, stop using the washer and leave it unplugged for our visit.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the speed feedback problem is in the motor, its wiring or the motor control board
  • Whether the drum turns freely or something is dragging
  • Whether the link between the two boards is clean
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F25F25 questions
My drum will not spin and it says F25, so what is happening?

It means the motor tachometer signal is wrong or missing. The motor control board relies on that speed feedback, so on this Whirlpool-built HE platform it stops the drive and displays F25.

Can an unbalanced load cause F25?

A heavy or jammed load can strain the drive, but F25 itself is about the speed signal. If it comes back with a small, balanced load, we should test the motor circuit.

Is F25 related to the F28 code?

They both involve the motor control board, but F28 is about communication between boards. We check both circuits when either one shows up, because a weak connection in one place can disturb the other.
