What F7 E5 means
Kenmore's VMW top-loaders, whose model numbers begin 110., are a Whirlpool-built platform. On them F7 E5 means the main electronic control board cannot determine the position of the drive system shifter. The shifter moves the drive between agitate and spin, so without a position signal the control stops. You will see F7 E5 on the display and the washer fails to switch modes. On the VMAX version, F7 E4 and F7 E5 are clutch codes instead.
Common causes of F7 E5
- Wiring connections on the main electronic control board and the shifter assembly
- Shifter assembly that does not report its position
- Position circuit on the main electronic control board
1. Open the lid and check that the basket and agitator turn freely by hand. 2. Remove anything caught between the basket and the tub. 3. Reduce the load and try a short cycle. 4. Leave the cabinet closed. The shifter is not owner work.
- Whether the shifter wiring connections are secure
- Whether the shifter assembly is the cause or the board is
- Whether the drive itself is free of drag
Other Washer codes
What is a shifter on a VMW top-loader, and why does F7 E5 name it?
It means the control cannot tell where the drive shifter sits. On this Whirlpool-built top-load washer the shifter picks between agitate and spin, so the washer stops and shows F7 E5.
Is F7 E5 a clutch problem on my washer?
Not on a VMW. A clutch failure is how the VMAX version reads that code. Check which version you own before you read the code.
Will the shifter wiring fix it?
A loose connection is the first thing we check and it sometimes solves the problem. If the wiring is sound, the shifter assembly is the next step, tested before any quote.
