What IE means
On Kenmore top-load washers whose model numbers start with 796, an LG-built platform, IE means the washer fills slowly. The control waited for water to reach the set level and it was taking too long. The display shows IE and the cycle will not continue until water comes in properly. A closed faucet, a kinked hose, or a clogged screen at the inlet valve are the usual reasons the supply is reduced before it reaches the tub.
Common causes of IE
- Water supply faucets not fully open
- Fill hoses that are kinked, or frozen in winter
- Debris or deposits in the screens at the water inlet valves
- Inlet valve assembly that is restricted
1. Check the water supply faucets behind the washer and make sure both are fully open. 2. Look at the fill hoses for kinks, and in winter for freezing. 3. Run a fill and see whether the water comes in at a normal pace. 4. If the code returns, leave the valve screens to us.
- Whether the screens are clogged or the valve is failing to open
- Whether the supply pressure at the faucet is low
- Whether the same code appears on a cold fill and a warm fill
Other Washer codes
Is IE on my 796 top-load the same as on a 796 front-load?
The letters are the same, but a front-load reports an inlet water supply error, while a top-load reports a slow fill. We treat them separately when we read the code.
Why do hoses freeze in winter?
In an unheated laundry area, water in the hoses can freeze and block the flow. A frozen hose will usually show up as this slow-fill reading when the washer tries to start.
Can I clean the screens on the inlet valve?
We would not take the hoses apart as a first try. If the screens are clogged, the valve assembly is normally replaced, and we confirm that with a written price before starting.
Still seeing IE?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
