Kenmore Washer Fills but Will Not Spin: What Separates a Lid Switch From a Belt
If your Kenmore washer agitates or fills but leaves clothes soaked, the cause depends on the type and the platform. This post sorts the likely paths.
A Kenmore washer that fills and sometimes agitates but will not spin leaves a drum of wet clothes and a lot of guesswork. The cause depends on whether it is a top-load or front-load washer, and on the platform in the model number.
Start with what you can observe
- Does the drum turn by hand with the power off? Heavy resistance and free movement mean different things.
- Does the lid or door click when closed? A silent latch can mean the washer never receives the signal to spin.
- Is there water in the tub? Some washers refuse to spin until the water drains.
- Do you hear the motor hum, or nothing at all?
Paths we look at
On a top-load washer, the lid switch is a common first check, followed by the drive parts under the tub, such as a coupling or belt, depending on the platform. On a front-load washer, the door lock, the drain pump and the drive belt or motor control come up. An unbalanced load can also stop a spin and is the easiest one to rule out.
What cannot be decided from the sign alone
A washer that does not spin can have a lid switch that failed, a drain that never emptied the tub, or a motor drive that wore out. All three look the same from the front. Pressing on the lid and listening helps, but it will not separate them with certainty.
What to do next
Unplug the washer, bail out standing water with a towel and bucket, and redistribute the load by hand. If it still will not spin on a small test load, stop running it, because forcing the cycle can overheat the motor. Send us the model label and a short note of what you saw. We will check the lock, drain and drive in that order and give you a written price before replacing anything. See our washer repair page for the work we cover.
