What E24 / E25 / E68 (417-prefix) means

The 417 prefix on a Kenmore dryer points to a platform we associate with Frigidaire and Electrolux, though that link is not documented; there E24 means a short circuit in the control's NTC temperature sensor and E25 means an open circuit in the same sensor. These describe a short or an open, not a reading that is merely out of range. E68 means a key is stuck closed. The owner sees the code and the dryer may not start or may stop early.

Common causes of E24 / E25 / E68 (417-prefix)

  • NTC sensor circuit short for E24
  • NTC sensor circuit open for E25
  • Stuck key on the console for E68
  • Wiring between sensor and control
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the dryer and wait a few minutes before plugging it back in. 2. Press each key on the console and make sure none stays down. 3. Wipe the console dry. 4. Check that the lint screen is clean and the vent is clear. 5. Start a short cycle and note which code returns.

! Why to stop there
  • Short and open readings both point to the sensor circuit, but a wiring problem can look the same as a failed sensor.
  • We measure the circuit before we replace anything.
  • The written price comes first and our 30-day warranty covers the work.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
E24 / E25 / E68 (417-prefix)E24 / E25 / E68 (417-prefix) questions
Why are there separate codes for E24 and E25?

Both involve the control's temperature sensor on a 417-series dryer. E24 is a short circuit and E25 is an open circuit, which are different readings and need slightly different checks.

What does E68 mean?

A key is reading as stuck closed. Moisture or a worn pad can cause that, so we check the console before suggesting anything about the control board.

Can I run the dryer?

If it starts normally you can try a cycle, but stop at once if it overheats, smells hot or shows the code again. Then leave it unplugged until we visit.
