What E98 or E9F means
On Kenmore digital-display front-load washers from about 2014, model numbers starting 417, E98 or E9F is a motor control communication problem. The electronic control board cannot exchange signals with the motor control board that runs the drum motor. With the link down, the washer will not spin or tumble the drum. The owner sees the code on screen and the cycle stops, often with the door still locked and water in the drum.
Common causes of E98 or E9F
- Wiring harness between the electronic control board and the motor control board
- Motor control board that is not answering the main board
- Electronic control board whose motor communication output has failed
1. Unplug the washer and wait a few minutes. 2. Plug it back in and run a short drain or spin cycle. 3. If water remains in the drum, do not open the door by force. 4. If E98 or E9F returns, call us before trying more cycles.
- Whether the lost link is a harness issue or a failed board
- Whether the motor itself is healthy once the boards communicate
- Whether water left in the drum needs to be drained before the visit
Other Washer codes
Are E98 and E9F the same problem?
They are documented together as a motor control communication problem. On your washer we treat them as the same link between the main board and the motor control board.
Why is there water left in the drum?
The washer stopped mid-cycle because it lost control of the motor. The water stays until the drain and drum can run again, so do not force the door.
Can I just replace the motor control board?
That is a common fix, but we do not start there. We test the harness and boards first, so the written price covers only what the link truly needs.
Still seeing E98 or E9F?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
